Thunder Run 2016 Report

We had an amazing time at Thunder Run this year.  The race starts at 12 noon Saturday and runs through for 24 hours to 12 noon Sunday.  Several options exist, you can run it solo, or as a relay in a team of 2, in a team of 5 or in a team of 8.  Thousands of runners camping for the weekend, great on site facilities, brilliant organisation, I can not recommend this event highly enough.  Each lap is approximately 6 miles, 100% off road, quite challenging and if it rains very muddy.

This year we had 2 solo runners, Martin Hookway and Susan Hookway.  A male team of two, James Osborne and Martin James.  A team of 8 with Janet Hampson, Rose James, Wayne Martison, Marie-Louise Taylor, Phil Whitehead, Allan Carson, Tony O’Connor and Sharon Carson.

The Hookway’s are quite experienced at Ultra Running (Martin having done lots before and Susan previously being Martin’s support crew and knocking out a few laps herself to keep him going) and they had a plan.  The rest of us winged it.

The weekend starts on Friday, 8am (the entry fee includes 3 nights camping).  The Hookway’s set up camp at 8am, solo runners get to camp in a separate area from the masses located at the start. Continue reading

Quite a warm evening which most of the runners felt.  Well done to Simon Wright and Paul Brown for willing their age group prizes.  The team prize the for men went to Scunthorpe, we were equal on points but they had the position on places.

Partially sighted runner Sharron Maughan was guided by Keith Lindley.

Wayne Martison came to the aid of a fellow runner who had collapsed close to the finish. Continue reading

Racing in club kit

We have a lot of new members who might not be aware of racing / running for the club in the correct kit.

If you are representing Doncaster AC in an event where you are running for the team (it does not matter if you are at the first or last to finish) then UKA rules state that you must wear the standard club kit.  We have various kit which complies with this including the standard vest, crop top, t-shirt and long sleeve t-shirt (the last two items are new additions).  The consequence for not racing in club colours is that you may be disqualified from the team prize, which may affect the other members of your team.  Of course the club wants you to race in your club kit, it helps us all feel like part of the same team and the club kit is recognised far and wide.

At informal events such as parkrun or events not held with a race licence you can wear any kit.  In general, if you have given your UKA number to enter then you should wear the club kit.

If you are running for a charity then it is of course acceptable to run in the charity kit (however the team rules would still apply so you may be disqualified from the team prize).

If you are competing in a higher competition (for example your county) then you should wear the kit that is required.

The full rules on club kit  (taken form the current version of the UKA Rules for Competition)  follow: Continue reading

A record of 162 Doncaster AC endurance performances this week!

Doncaster Town Centre Road Races – 13 July 2016

121 Doncaster AC runners competed across the three races and the club is proud of each and every one of you!

This event takes a massive amount of planning and organising, we are all volunteers who feel passionate about the club and the event.  On the night we had an army of volunteers from our club, other clubs and friends of the club (many thanks).  All the money we have left after the costs, such as organising the road closures, chip timing and t-shirts goes back to the club to support grass roots athletics in Doncaster.  This includes supporting our junior members of which we have hundreds (25 of them ran the fun run!) and supporting beginner runners (over 100 this year so far) and paying for track maintenance.

Its impossible for me to write about everyone’s performances and PB’s etc, just to many to list!

Photos from all 3 races can be found here. Continue reading
