Great North Run – 8 September 2019
The biggest turnout from team DAC ever at the Great North Run? 26 Athletes completed the course.

Natalie wrote “Back in June I ran the Humber Bridge Half marathon & got chatting to a fellow runner who had sadly lost her dad during the week before the race, she was telling me that although she had been running for over 20 years, he had never seen her run, this really struck a chord with me and with this in mind, I found myself setting off on Friday to compete in the Iconic Great North Run with not only my hubby & daughter in tow, but also my mum & dad who had not only never seen me run but had never been part of anything like the atmosphere I knew they would experience at South Shields on Sunday!
If you want to get an idea of the scale of the Great North Run, you need only check out the size of the queues for the portaloos before the race! It’s hard to imagine over 57,000 people gathered in one place, but crossing the motorway bridge to head down the slip road to the start, its alarmingly clear why the Great North Run is the biggest half marathon in the world – there are people as far as the eye can see, the colours, the sounds – everything seems brighter, louder, bigger, and there is a buzz of excitement and anticipation in the air.
Luckily Alistair arranged to meet up with me before the race as it seemed there were two places you can catch a bus to the start and I was waiting in the other place to everyone else & starting to panic that I was alone. In hindsight, I need not worry – the organisers have planned this with military precision and one bus appears after another to take the hordes of excited runners to the start, it doesn’t even matter if you don’t know where you’re going when you get off the bus, you just follow the masses like some magical pied piper.
Alistair and I sat on the grass verge of the motorway eating our bananas with still an hour to go before the start, its ideal conditions we’re told – light breeze and about 14 degrees – the sun is blazing down and it already feels much hotter! Before we know it, it’s time to find our starting pen – I am in Zone D but for those starting further back, it must be a mile’s walk or more to reach their position. I am stood in my pen doing some stretches and I see Claire and Kerry walk past, their DAC vests jumping out of the crowd to me, I shout to them, but already the noise from the music and people talking is way too loud for them to hear me.
It’s almost time to start and the Elite Men start to be announced, it feels surreal to be taking part in the same race as some of the Worlds greats, the adrenaline starts to kick in and before I know it I’m assuming a slow walk, then a gentle jog as I near the start…
And we’re off! This is real now, there are people all around me but it doesn’t feel too crowded, I look at my garmin and wonder if I am maybe going too fast but I feel comfortable and this stretch is downhill (I would later realize that things don’t always start as they mean to go on – The GNR is a long way off being Flat – undulating would be the word they use – 75% uphill would be my description!) We go under the underpass and someone bellows ‘Oggy Oggy Oggy’ – “Oy, Oy, Oy” we all respond. It’s impossible to run this race without a permanent smile on your face, there are hundreds running in fantastic fancy dress costumes – I pass a man in a gorilla suit and for a moment feel bad for feeling hot, I cannot imagine how hot he must be! At the same time there are also reminders everywhere of the fragility of life, I pass a man walking, he has an apology written on his back “I had a cardiac arrest in May… I’m sorry that I’m walking” We approach the Tyne Bridge and I have a huge grin, this is amazing, what a shame there were no red arrows this year though.
Over half way, and I’m still holding my pace well – I manage mile 6 in 8:49 & mile 7 in 8:46 – I am very hot though, despite carrying my own drink in my vest, I’ve taken a bottle of water at every station and had at least 2 showers already today!– I start to worry that I am not wearing sunscreen and promise that I will definitely invest in a visor for next time!
Sadly for me things start to go wrong at mile 8 – my right foot feels like its rolling inwards and I can feel a blister developing on the ball of my foot, I start to try and run in a style that puts less weight on my right foot but that soon takes its toll and I feel a pain running down my leg from my hip. I feel like crying, I so wanted to do well this race but I can already see from my average pace which is increasing with every mile that is not my day for a PB.
A fellow runner starts talking to me, he wants me to run with him, he tells me his father has travelled all the way from India to see him cross the line, he also says that he was born and grew up in India and today is too hot even by his standards! – That makes me feel slightly better. I see Mick Riley pass me and he looks really strong, he’s going to do great in the Yorkshire Marathon!
Only a park run to go! Another long uphill stretch and I know the end is in sight! The ground starts to drop away steeply, but this is not as welcome as it sounds, its hard on the knees! We round the corner onto South Shields sea front and the end is in sight! The atmosphere is electric, the crowds are cheering and roaring, a group of little lads sat on top of a bus shelter shout ‘Come on Natalie’ and I look up and give them a thumbs up.
I passed ‘800 metres to go’ some time ago, they must have made a mistake and missed a zero off, I’ve run at least 8000 metres since I passed that sign surely? – My legs are tired and I feel like I’m running through treacle. My eyes dart left and right to see if I can see my family, but there are just thousands here at the finish and it’s impossible to spot anyone.
And just like that, it’s done, I cross the timing strip with my arms held aloft and let out a huge sigh of relief – #GNR 2019 is done in 2:04:53 – Almost 8 minutes more than my half PB but I try not to be too disappointed. I’m already vowing to come back next year and give it another go!
If I’m honest, I’m not a huge fan of the course, it’s a stinker, but the crowd support, atmosphere and general scale of the event more than make up for it, and did my parents see me cross that finish line? – “What did you do when you crossed the line?” asked my mum. “I put my arms in the air” I said …. “fanastic” she said “your dad saw you… I’m too short to see anything, but your dad saw you cross that line and he got quite emotional”
For me then, that’s Job done!”

Saxilby 5k – 8 September 2019
Well done Shaz Wood who completed this race in 21:11, Shaz wrote “Got to love a pre work 5km race. 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️not quite GNR this time round 😂
Saxilby 5km- 5th lady overall and 23 seconds faster than the same course last year 😳 which took me by surprise given that training has been inconsistent at best !
I pretty much left my racing mojo somewhere back in mid 2018 and haven’t seen it since resulting in barely racing this year, but hoping this is the start of a return to some form!
