British and Irish Cross country International

Myself (Kev Newman) and Caroline Wheelhouse competed in the above event in Swansea on 17 Nov 2018.

The process to get selected to represent England is as follows. The s

electors look at runners performance during the last 12 months in both the British Masters and England Masters events, over 5k and 10 k on the road and track. Both of us posted some good results, I won the British Masters 10,000 metres on the track and Caroline had a fantastic run in the Amsterdam half marathon in a time of 1.29.14. collecting Gold. This was the second fastest V60 run of all time.

So with a good year under our belts we applied for selection and both were successful in our respective age groups. Each team has four runners with 3 to count. Race day arrived and we competed against the best from Scotland Wales Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. The conditions were bright and breezy, the course was 3 laps for Caroline and 4 laps for myself. The course itself was undulating but very runnable we both had really good runs.

Caroline finished second overall in the W60 category. Helping her team to win Gold. I finished second England runner and helped my team to win Gold.

It is a long hard process to gain a place in the England team with lots of hard work, but at the same time it is an honor and worth all the effort.
