Edinburgh marathon festival
Congratulations to:
Irene Fazakerley (V50) who completed the marathon in 5:16:07.
George Laing (V55) who completed the half marathon in 1:48:42. George also completed the 5k race 21:07.
Kirsty Laing (SF) who completed the half marathon in 1:48:44.
Kirsty wrote “Today I completed my first half marathon in a time of 1.48.44.
In September 2017 I started running 3 x 5ks per week with an average of 28 minutes. This was the start of my running…

Then, 1 year ago, I completed my first 10k in a time of 49.49 here in the same city. This time last year I was in awe of anyone who could run 13 miles and run for any longer than 50 minutes because that was hard work for me. I loved watching the half marathoners coming in but I didn’t think it was for me.
But, since then, I’ve set myself achievable goals and I’ve managed to build myself up to completing a half marathon.
Running isn’t easy and at times you have to dig really deep to achieve what you want to achieve but it can be done with consistent training (and George Laing) as your coach.
Thanks to my Dad for the constant support with my running and for Lewis Atherton for always pushing me on too!
I just wanted to write a little post because I know that people often consider running but don’t know where to start… just start by setting achievable goals and building up slow and steady and remember to be proud of yourself for just getting out.
Loved the Edinburgh half experience! ✅❤️
Now to think about the next milestone.

Liverpool Rock N Roll weekend
Tracey fell hard at mile 21, so massive well done for finishing. She thanked “Merv and Mick for running in with us and Martin for being by my side all the way. If I ever do another Marathon I will make sure it’s a flat one. Thanks team DAC for a fab weekend. Liverpool rocks”

Birmingham 10k – 26 May 2019
Well done to Kev Newman who qualified to run in his England vest, kev was 5th v60 (he thought he would be). 38.22. Really tough course, very undulating, windy and wet. Great turnout for England masters never seen so many. England beat Celtic nations so a good result. **these results are not correct, Kev may have been higher placed in the V60**
Huddersfield 10k – 26 May 2019
Well done to Simon Wright, another good time and nice to see Martin Wilkinson getting a race in.

Cape Wrath Challenge – Susan Forbes
A week ago I had a much needed break in Balnakeil Craft Village, Durness, the furthest Noth West mainland village in UK, for the 10th year, with my old friend Anita. She is the one that suggested when I joined Pacers in Sept ’15 “now you are a runner we have a little race up here you could do?’ I booked my train ticket for May ’16 before I looked at the weeks events!
Cape Wrath Challenge is a unique, tough, low key, week of running & social events to raise funds for the Village Hall. Race Director ex Military Police & Chair ex Marine! Runners of all ages and abilities come from all over the world, the hardest bit is finding accommodation!
I only did 2 runs last week at my 4th Cape Wrath Challenge as I’m not well but enjoyed marshalling… here’s my report.
Saturday.
6am train to Edinburgh, time for coffee on sunny Calton Hill, change to Inverness, pipe band & vintage car rally & tea at Girvans (hailstones & sun) then minibus to Balnakeil. Arrived 8pm!
Sunday.
Walked to Faraid Head MOD site before helping hand out bags & numbers at Registration & wine & nibbles at Meet & Greet in the modern Village Hall- our Race Headquarters for the week.
Monday.
Loch Eribol Half or 10k road race. Timekeeping with local Lucy- organiser & ex PE teacher.
Tuesday.
Two Lochs 5m Trail. I ran with lovely young couple Scott & Olivia (who swam the length of the second Loch as training for her Tri!)
Hot & hilly over the recently burnt heather & peat. Very rocky deep paths but stunning views.
Wednesday. Around Durness mixed terrain
10m or 6m.
Red hot! I had the 5m water station at the farmers gate after the ferry.
Thursday.
Beach Run 2m.
Hot fun run on both beaches this year as the tide was out. Amazing fancy dress outfits, Olivia’s birthday cake and 3 mad Paddle Boarders came round from the ferry followed by seals- great fun as I wasn’t going to run but I must make more effort next year & wear fancy dress!

Friday.
Rest day but I walked lots ( I walked up & down to the Hall every day) & got a ride to Skerray.
Saturday. Marathon & 2 or 3 team Relays.
I was honoured to be asked by the Chair & Race Director to help up at the lighthouse. I know the area, the people, the unique event & tough route, having run it all!
Up at 5am with the cuckoo, lift at 5.30, ferry at 5.45 to Capeside, bus at 6 for the iconic lighthouse.
Loved marshalling at the newly painted lighthouse- foggy, damp, nippy, but a few drams & Orkney tablet helped with good friends.
Very proud to wear my DAC Pacers kit & hi viz coach vest to marshall the marathon & I ran the last mile with our final relay runner Olivia, as she struggled with a neck injury after a fall running earlier in the week. Amazing effort by all & only one DNF. I shall be back to run it again but maybe in a relay team!
PS My moment of glory- I got to run round the lighthouse with the final relay runner & got a medal!
