London Marathon – 28 May 2019

Gary Brown (who was one of our beginner runners in 2018) wrote “Thanks everyone for your support today and leading up to the race today. I can’t begin to explain how happy I am with my time but more so my pacing. Martin James thank you so much for creating my training plan it was perfect. Thanks Anthony O’Connor for organising the Sunday long runs and advice. I’d also like to mention my fellow beginners from January 2018 for the constant support we give each other. Alistair Collis, Natalie Heptinstall and Kris Calvert. “

Caroline Wheelhouse won her age group, she is ranked as the 5th fastest V60 lady of all time for the marathon distance, wrote “After last year’s accident and subsequent painful limp to the finish line I simply had to come back and finish the job! A good autumn season set me up well to begin marathon training in December and in February I had a great confidence boost when I raced at the Stamford 30k.

My hard runs are hard, but recovery runs are as slow as I feel comfortable with on the day; don’t wear a watch and very often it’s just a jog. As an older runner it’s important to know your limits and keep injury free, plus I’m able rack up the miles safely. A two week taper kept me focused for the day and when it arrived I felt strong. Placing myself at the rear of the Championship start I let the fast guys go and settled into a comfortable rhythm, hoping for an even race or negative split (a great boost when you’re passing other runners at the end!). All the way round my mind was so calm and settled, completely zoned out from everyone around me (so I’m sorry if I didn’t respond to some of our fantastic supporters), and at times all I was aware of was my own body moving comfortably through time. I pushed on at 20 miles and ‘lost’ mile 22 altogether! I can’t remember enjoying a marathon quite so much, and with a negative split 3.17.08 (26.55 miles!) I put the events of 2018’s race behind me.

Martin wrote a blog post here. As mens captain I am always very proud of our athletes always giving their best.

If anyone else would like to send a report to me pleased do.
