SUCCESS FOR DONCASTER DISABLED ATHLETES AT 2014 UK SAINSBURY’S SCHOOL GAMES
Three teenage athletes from Doncaster Athletic Club represented North East England in the U 20 Disabled squad at the 2014 Sainsbury’s UK School Games in Manchester 4-7 September.
On day 2 of the games, the trio competed in the warm autumn sunshine at the Sportcity Regional Athletic Centre. T36 sprinter Ben Heflin, dug deep in a gritty 400m performance and was cheered over the line in 5th position by a large crowd in the stadium. F20 athlete Paige Watkin-Drury achieved a season’s best distance in the long jump to win a silver medal – a great performance as following a recent injury she needed to change her run up and push off leg. F36 thrower William Baxter improved his lifetime best three times in shot put to claim fourth spot, and in discus won a silver medal with a lifetime best throw in the first round of the competition.
The multisport games attracted more than 1600 elite young athletes from all parts of the UK and was launched at an opening ceremony at Manchester Arena and finished at a closing ceremony in the velodrome at the National Cycling Centre on Sunday.
