Wentworth Castle, Stainborough, Barnsley
Location of Venue
Wentworth Castle is situated in the village of Stainborough near Barnsley, about 2 miles from Junction 37 of the M1. Despite its name, Wentworth Castle is not in the village of Wentworth near Rotherham (This is seven miles away from Wentworth Castle). Postcode is S75 3ET
How to Get There
From the M1 motorway
Leave the motorway at J37 and head towards Barnsley Town Centre on the A628. Follow the brown and Garden directional signs. Take middle lane (signed A6133) straight away and turn R at traffic lights, signposted Doncaster A6133 – brown tourist sign at junction for Wentworth Castle. Continue along the dual carriageway until next set of traffic lights (approx 1 mile) where you turn R. Turn L at next junction after you have crossed over the motorway. Continue through Gilroyd until you reach Stainborough Village at a crossroads junction. Go straight forward, past the Strafford Arms pub and follow the estate road up the hill to the visitor car park.
Parking
There is a large car park at the top of the drive in front of the castle. Car park arrangements have changed from the last time we had an event here. There is no barrier on exit. You could easily drive out without paying, but I would like to suggest that all drivers make a donation of £2.50, which can be made in the shop.
Refreshments
The castle has a very nice café and there is a shop too, which will be open from 9am or as soon after when the staff arrive. The Strafford Arms does lunches, but you probably need to book on a Sunday.
Toilets
Next to the shop and café. Please take off spikes when you go inside the building.
About the courses
Although the courses are on the parkland in front of the house, some of the grass may be longer than might be expected for parkland. Gradients are not too steep but there are some longish up and down sections. Paths are few and there is no tarmac. If it has rained a lot the lower sections of the course could be quite wet underfoot. The start and finish are slightly different to last time.
Special Interest Features
The gardens behind Wentworth Castle are very attractive in season, as is the ruined folly castle (called Stainborough Castle) at the top of the gardens.
